Yellow as a little girl! She never appears as a child in the novel itself, but it was a good exercise to try to envision her. With a rather portentous bee, given that the bees only become important to her life and work when she reaches her twenties and takes over the job of village weird woman (aka psychopomp).

This is hard to explain, except that Yellow begins the novel very tired of having to tell people "No," and also having been turned down pretty hard in love, and frankly there's a lot of negation in her life.

On a cheerfuller note, Yellow takes up crosswords at the behest of her friend Mr. Woyzeck, and however reluctantly does become a bit addicted to them. It also allows her to find an important piece of information about the malevolent entity plaguing her.
