Once upon a time there was a jackalope.
She was not, however, the kind of jackalope that lives out in the middle of the continent, with a rangy body and enormous ears and pronghorns. She was, rather, an eastern swamp jackalope, and mostly she looked like a little rabbit with a faint sprinkling of red across her agouti back. Her antlers were like those of a yearling whitetail deer.
As far as she could tell, she was the only eastern swamp jackalope left.
